Unique Breathable Walls Eliminate Mold & Mildew

This one-storey daycare was designed to adhere to very strict city design board and childcare safety guidelines. It was a full turn-key project that could only take place after the demolition of an existing building.

The daycare includes a heated crawl space on a sloping roof and incorporates the latest rainscreen technology to ensure dry, breathable walls that eliminate the prospect of mold and mildew. The interior warm air, normally exhausted to the exterior, is collected and cycled through a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) and electronic air filter to recover the heat, which helps to reduce heating costs. A high-efficiency, gas-fired furnace combined with the latest technology in HRV and electronic air filtering provides additional economical heat and ventilation. An outside covered play area is connected to the main roof.

The interior includes an activity room, art space and nap room as well as an office, a parents’ room, kitchen and storage area. Light maple cabinets and birch cubbies at the entry add a warm touch. Door lights and plenty of windows maximize natural light.
